Description

The Harold Carroll Memorial Scholarship is open to domestic commencing students who completed Year 12 in the Western District of Victoria and are undertaking studies in TAFE or an undergraduate degree for a minimum study period of one year.

Eligibility 

  • Domestic student
  • New/commencing student in 2025
  • Studying at one of the following campuses: SMB, Camp Street, Gillies Street, Mt Rowan, Mt Helen or the Wimmera Campus
  • Completed Year 12 in the Western District of Victoria in 2024.
  • Former pupil of primary or secondary schools in the Western District of Victoria * with preference given to former pupils of:
    • Port Fairy Consolidated School
    • St Patrick’s Primary School (Port Fairy);
    • Balmoral High School;
    • Balmoral Consolidated School;
    • Coleraine Primary School; or
    • St Joseph’s School (Coleraine).
    • * Western District includes that area of Victoria approximately west and southwest of Calder Highway including towns and cities on the highway.  Federation University Australia reserves the right to determine the localities contained within this boundary.  Preference will be given to former pupils of those schools named.

Ongoing eligibility

  • Undergraduate students who complete their degree within three years may be eligible to hold the scholarship for an additional year to undertake an honours course, eligibility for this is to be determined by the Trust.
  • the scholarship is tenable for the minimum time necessary to complete the course provided that:
    • the student studies full-time or to an extent deemed appropriate by the Trustees on advice from the Selection Committee
    • the student’s progress is in each year considered to be satisfactory by the Trustees on advice from the Selection Committee.

General Circumstances

Please note, a scholarship application does not guarantee a place in the course of your choice.

The scholarship holder is required to commence study no later than 1 March in the year in which the scholarship commences.  

Scholarships are not available to Federation University employees, employed by the University at a time fraction of 0.5 or above. 

Scholarship Amount 

1 Scholarship Available 

The recipient will receive $6,000 in two instalments: $3,000 after the first census date and $3,000 after the second census date.

Scholarship Payments

  • If successful in being awarded the Harold Carroll Memorial Scholarship, the recipient will receive the scholarship payments for a period of three years, provided they continue to meet the ongoing eligibility requirements.
  • Students successful in being awarded a Federation University Australia Foundation Scholarship will receive their payment in two installments each year for three years.  

Conditions

  • A student must formally accept the scholarship offer in order to receive any payment, and in doing so, accepts the conditions of the scholarships
  • Ongoing eligibility will be assessed each semester.  If circumstances or eligibility change which render a student holding the Harold Carroll Memorial Scholarship ineligible according to eligibility requirements, the scholarship will be terminated.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to maintain current contact details, including email, in the Federation University Student Administration System (mysc.federation.edu.au).  If a student cannot be contacted by mail, email or telephone for the purpose of assessing ongoing eligibility, and as a result their eligibility cannot be determined in the allowed time frame, their scholarship will be terminated.
  • Students awarded the Harold Carroll Memorial Scholarships are not permitted to suspend their scholarship if they take leave from studies or defer their course.

Termination of a Federation University Australia Foundation Scholarship will occur:

a)       if a student ceases to meet the eligibility criteria; or
b)      if Federation University determines that the student:

  • has committed serious misconduct during a course of study whilst attending Federation University including, but not limited to, the provision of false or misleading information.
  • The Trustee may terminate the student’s scholarship or suspend for one year on advice from the Selection Committee if it considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory in one year.  If the scholarship is suspended, the Trustee may recommend the re-awarding of the scholarship to the same student after that year.  If, on the advice of the Selection Committee, it considers that the student’s academic record in that year justifies that action.

Donors

The Federation University Australia Foundation acknowledges with gratitude funds donated to the Foundation to support Foundation scholarships, and warmly thanks corporate donors and individual donors and their families for their generosity.

Successful recipients of a Foundation scholarship are expected to attend a Foundation event with our donors to receive a scholarship certificate in May, and provide feedback to donors prior to the census date in August on what it has meant to receive the scholarship.

Reference letter

A reference letter is a written recommendation from someone who knows your situation well. This person: 

  • should be at least 18 years old. 
  • have known you for at least a year or for the entire time you were in the situation. 
  • not be a close family member. 
  • not live with you. 
  • and be able to speak about your situation without needing you to explain it to them. 

Reference letters can be written by supervisors, co-workers, clients, teachers, or professors. 

Please note, that the reference letters must not be older than 12 months from submission date. Reference letters that do not meet the requirements will be deemed as invalid.
