Description

The Deadly Education Costs Scholarship (ICECS) aims to improve higher education access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’.

Eligibility 

  • Domestic student 
  • Be an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person 
  • Provide either a Confirmation of Aboriginality or a statutory declaration
  • Provide evidence of low socio-economic status or financial hardship (documents such as Centrelink statement, payslips. Bank statements can be used if an explanation is provided in a personal statement)
  • Enrolled in an enabling course (FAST), undergraduate, honours or postgraduate course at Federation University

Scholarship Amount/Benefit

The student will receive $2,000 per semester, paid after each semester census date. 

The scholarship is available for up to 20 payments.  

 Conditions

  • Be active and enrolled post census date   

  • If payment is required before census date due to financial hardship, you will need to put this in your application to be considered, however If you withdraw from your studies, you may be requested to repay all or part of the scholarship.

  • Students who defer their offer or take a leave of absence will forfeit their award.  

  • Not receiving a Start-Up Loan from Centrelink. If you are receiving a Start-Up Loan please come and talk to the AEC Team about cancelling this request to receive this scholarship. 

  • You’ll need to notify the Scholarships team immediately if you: 

    • transfer to another undergraduate course at Federation

    • withdraw from your studies 

    • change your home address 

    • experience a change in your circumstances.

 Commonwealth Scholarships are governed by a set of conditions

 As a Commonwealth scholarship recipient, you’ll need to follow these scholarship requirements and agree to these conditions: 

  • You can only receive an Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarship for up to 20 scholarship periods. As courses can run in normal semesters, or within trimesters or other study periods, the term scholarship period is used. A scholarship period is equal to a teaching period.

  • During the scholarship periods, you may be in receipt of a Deadly Education Costs Scholarship (ICECS) and if eligible, a Deadly Relocation/Accommodation Scholarship, concurrently or separately. 

  • You should not be in receipt of a Commonwealth scholarship from more than one provider at any one time:

    • if you are currently receiving a Deadly Education Costs Scholarship (ICECS) from Federation University, you can’t also receive a Start-up Scholarship or a Start-up Loan from Centrelink for the same period. 

    • if you are currently receiving a Deadly Relocation/Accommodation Scholarship (ICAS) from Federation University you can’t also receive a ABSTUDY Residential Costs Options or Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships from Centrelink for the same period.

  • You cannot transfer a commonwealth scholarship to study at another institution. 

  • Where a recipient defers or takes a leave of absence, scholarship payments will be suspended for up to one-year maximum 

  • To maintain your scholarship, you’ll need to maintain satisfactory academic progress. 

  • You should seek independent advice from the relevant authorities on the effect that the scholarship may have on your eligibility for Austudy or Youth Allowance, or whether there will be any taxation implications. 

  • You can’t hold this scholarship at the same time as a similar scholarship unless otherwise specified.
